25 Years in Victoria, BC

10 Years in Fan Tan Alley

This year marks two meaningful milestones for Saltspring Soapworks: 25 years in Victoria and 10 years in Fan Tan Alley.

For a quarter century, we've welcomed visitors and locals alike into our Victoria shop, sharing handmade soap, natural body care, and a slower, more thoughtful approach to self-care. For the past decade, we've called Fan Tan Alley home—a place as unique and storied as the city itself.

If you're looking for unique things to do in Victoria, BC, a stroll through Fan Tan Alley is often near the top of the list.

Located in Victoria's historic Chinatown, Fan Tan Alley is one of the narrowest streets in Canada and one of the city's most beloved destinations. Its brick passageways, lanterns, independent shops, and hidden corners invite visitors to slow down and explore.

For the past ten years, our little shop has been part of that experience.

A Long History in Victoria

Before moving to Fan Tan Alley, our first Victoria location was on Lower Johnson Street, another iconic destination known for its independent retailers and local character.

Over the past 25 years, Victoria has become an important part of our story. Many customers first discovered us while visiting the city and have returned year after year—some making a stop at our shop part of their Victoria tradition.

Today, visitors can browse our collection of:

  • Handmade soaps
  • Natural bath and body care
  • Canadian-made gifts
  • Seasonal and limited-edition products
  • Thoughtfully crafted products made on Salt Spring Island

Our hope has always been to create a calm and welcoming space where people can slow down, explore natural scents, and find something meaningful to take home.

Visiting Fan Tan Alley

Tucked within Victoria's historic Chinatown, our Fan Tan Alley shop offers a quiet retreat from the bustle of downtown.

Whether you're searching for locally made gifts, natural skincare, handmade soap, or simply one of Victoria's most unique shopping experiences, Fan Tan Alley is well worth a visit.

Visitors often come to photograph the alley's historic architecture, browse its collection of independent shops, and discover businesses that reflect the creative spirit of Victoria.

Celebrating 10 Years in Fan Tan Alley

To celebrate a decade in Fan Tan Alley, we're hosting a special anniversary weekend from June 26–28.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can enjoy:

  • 10% off all purchases at our Fan Tan Alley shop
  • A special release of our new Fan Tan Alley Soap Bar
  • Complimentary gifts and small surprises throughout the weekend
  • A chance to celebrate alongside our staff, customers, and community

The Fan Tan Alley Soap Bar was created especially for this occasion and is inspired by the history, texture, and community of Chinatown. Crafted with Yunnan black tea and activated bamboo charcoal, it pays tribute to the neighbourhood that has welcomed us for the past decade.

A Part of Victoria's Story

Victoria has been an important chapter in our journey—from our early days on Lower Johnson Street to our home today in Fan Tan Alley.

We're grateful to be part of the city's community of independent makers, retailers, and small businesses, and thankful for the customers who continue to support us year after year.

Whether you're a long-time customer or discovering us while exploring Victoria for the first time, thank you for being part of our story.

We look forward to welcoming you to Fan Tan Alley.
