From humble beginnings

Our story begins long before Saltspring Soapworks did: Four generations ago with a grandmother and a farm. Using beef tallow and ash, she handcrafted soap—a legacy that was handed down to her granddaughter and our founder, Linda Quiring. Our gentle, nourishing formulas with herbal extracts and proteins are suitable for most hair types, including colour-treated (always test a patch to be sure). The Conditioner helps with manageability and moisture. For specific concerns, our Face Care or body products aren’t hair-specific, but consistent gentle care helps overall hair health.

How do I use the shampoo bar? How long will it last?

Wet hair and bar, lather directly on scalp or in hands, massage, rinse. For longevity, store on a well-drained dish or in a soap saver bag. With regular use, a bar can last many weeks—excellent value and eco-friendly too.

Are your hair care products sulphate-free?

Yes, like all our washes, our hair care is formulated without harsh sulphates for a gentler experience that supports healthy hair and scalp.

Can I use the shampoo bar on my body too?

Many customers do! The Rosemary Mint Shampoo Bar works beautifully as an all-over gentle cleanser or for scalp-focused washing. It’s a versatile, travel-friendly multi-tasker.

Do your shampoos lather well and clean without stripping?

Yes. They provide good lather while being gentle. The formulas include conditioning and nourishing ingredients so hair feels clean but not stripped or dry. Follow with our Rosemary Mint Conditioner for best results on longer or drier hair.

Shampoo bars (like Rosemary Mint Shampoo Bar) are solid, travel-friendly, zero-waste friendly options that lather well and are biodegradable. Liquid shampoos (Rosemary Mint Shampoo, Rosehip Calendula Baby Shampoo) offer liquid pump convenience and slightly different textures with added conditioning agents. Both are gentle and effective.

The shampoo bar is fantastic and I love it

The shampoo bar is fantastic and I love it. If I can I'll use it forever. I love the lather and I love the scent. I've looked forward to using it every morning for a couple years now. If I had one complaint it would be that shipping to Victoria is a bit expensive, but that's an easy fix for me to just pick it up locally.

Great shampoo

I have been using this bar for over a year and really like it. I love the lather and the scent is great without being overpowering. I have worked in scent reduced environments for over 20 years and find most hair products too strongly scented. I have oily hair and this bar really does the job without drying out my hair.

Refreshing clean hair

I have been using the Rosemary Mint shampoo bar for several years now. I switched because I was sick of the plastic bottles and these have minimal packaging. As a bonus, the bars smell fantastic and last a long time and I get to support a local business. I never needed to do the vinegar rinse that some people recommend. I never had an issue with soapy residue and I have extremely fine hair. It used to be oily but that seems to have ended.

Best shampoo bar!

This is by far the best shampoo bar I've ever used. It smells great, lathers well, and cleans my hair and scalp thoroughly. Love the natural ingredients that are so, so good for your hair! Will keep using this product for as long as possible and I will never go back to plastic bottled shampoo again.

I wanted to get rid of plastic in my house and tried the shampoo bar. I am very allergic to scents and I was hoping this would be OK. I will never go back to bottled shampoo again. I have thick short hair that tends to be frizzy and dry. My hair is so soft and easy to manage without using additional styling products. The scent is absolutely wonderful and I have not experienced any kind of allergic reaction to it. I am so pleased. I highly recommend this wonderful shampoo bar.

We are sorry your experience with our shampoo bar was not satisfactory.
Sometimes when people switch from commercial hair care to natural shampoo bars, there is a short period of adjustment for your hair—during which time chemical build-up starts coming out. We suggest rinsing with organic apple cider vinegar (Bragg’s brand works well), after you shampoo your hair. If your scalp is too sensitive for the vinegar, dilute the vinegar with water or tilt your head down—so you are just rinsing the hair with vinegar. Then use a small amount of our conditioner. You’ll find that the build-up comes out quicker and the vinegar leaves a nice shine . Warmly, Amber.

Love love love. I have been searching for a shampoo bar and even better, this packaging is waste freeeee which is amazing! My favourite thing about this bar is it doesn't strip the hair of its natural oils. My hair is clean after, of course, but its shiny and silky! Will never use bottled shampoo EVER again. Love. I just ordered the jojoba olive oil and the chamomile calendula and I'm super excited!

I wanted to switch up my salon shampoo for a natural one. To be honest, for me it was a bit of a transition. At first i wasn't sold on it, but after reaching out to the company to see if they could offer any tips, i was pleased to receive a lengthy email back giving me all the tips and tricks to help detox my hair and transition to a natural product.
I now absolutely love this product, my hair is healthy, shiney and so so soft. Seriously doesn't feel like my hair! Highly recommend this product and 100% recommend this company.

Great for Travel

I purchased a couple of these for business travel, they are great because they take up very little space and you don't need to worry about having a liquid in your carry on when flying.

I've been a long-time user of the Rosemary Mint shampoo and although this is from the same collection, I wouldn't say this product is the same. The scent is definitely different but it does lather up nicely and leave your hair feeling squeaky clean. My only complaint is that its a bit harsh on coloured hair and pulls the colour out more than I would like. I'll stick to the liquid form for everyday use but continue to use these while traveling.
