Saltspring Soapworks founder in the greenhouse on Salt Spring Island

Our Story

From humble beginnings

Our story begins long before Saltspring Soapworks did: Four generations ago with a grandmother and a farm. Using beef tallow and ash, she handcrafted soap—a legacy that was handed down to her granddaughter and our founder, Linda Quiring. The simplicity of our beginnings remains the essence of our remedies today.

Saltspring Soapworks Soap Saver — FAQs

Our Soap bars are small-batch, handmade on Salt Spring Island with a focus on skin-nourishing formulations as well as cleansing. We use high-quality sustainable oils and we leave in the the beneficial glycerin, avoid fillers and harsh additives, and create unique essential oil scent blends inspired by our home on the West Coast. The result is a
luxurious yet authentic Soap Bar bar that supports healthy skin.

Many customers successfully use our bars (especially Rosemary Mint or unscented) as a gentle shampoo bar in a pinch for their hair. We do offer and recommend our dedicated shampoo bars and liquid hair care however. Follow these with a conditioner if your hair needs extra moisturizing.

Some are mildly exfoliating. Most exfoliating is our Loofah Soap Bars. Oatmeal Clove provides gentle exfoliation from oat bran as does our Rosemary Mint Bar. Rhubarb Clay offers a bracing, creamy cleanse with subtle polishing from clay. Most others focus on cleansing and scent rather than heavy exfoliation—tray pairing with one of our body scrubs or Body Gelatos for deeper exfoliation.

With proper care (well-drained soap dish, not left in standing water), most bars last 3–6 weeks with daily use, depending on the size, water hardness, and how much you use. They are concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

Bars with Shea Butter (like Lavender Shea Butter or Rose Shea Butter) or oatmeal (Oatmeal
Clove) are excellent for dry or sensitive skin. Always check ingredients for personal sensitivities and consider patch testing.

Our Soap Bars create a rich, creamy lather thanks to the balanced oils and formulation. Because natural glycerin remains from the soap-making process and many bars include moisturizing butters, they are generally far less drying than conventional soaps. Customers often describe them as leaving skin feeling clean yet soft.

Wet the bar or your skin, work up a creamy lather, massage gently over body or face, then rinse thoroughly. Many of our bars are excellent as gentle facial cleansers because they lack harsh detergents (always try a small spot to be sure). For best results and longevity, use a soap dish that allows drainage between uses. They travel well—no liquid restrictions.

Our soap bars are hand made made from saponified sustainable vegetable oils (palm, coconut, olive), often with added shea butter, oat bran, or clay for specific benefits. We scent them almost exclusively with pure essential oils and incorporate skin-loving ingredients like Shea Butter or kelp in some. The natural glycerin created during saponification stays in the bar for a moisturizing feel. Full INCI ingredient lists are available on each product page.
